I began working at PDC Dental, now known as Alex Jones Dentistry, in March 2017, fresh out of training with just 6 months of practice under my belt at a small NHS surgery in the Peak District. During this time I was introduced to Alex, who was looking to employ a newly qualified dentist in an apprentice role with the view to introducing them into the world of private dentistry. After a couple of meetings I was offered the position and I jumped at the chance as I knew that Alex was providing the type of dental care that I was aspiring to offer.
When I now look back, I appreciate the amount of trust that Alex put in me from day one to take on the care of his patients as the new dentist with limited experience outside of dental training. During the first year of my new role, I spent four days a week carrying out general dentistry for our patients in the Penistone and Barnsley practices. I also spent one day a week shadowing Alex in his surgery. I saw everything from routine dental checkups through to advanced full mouth rehabilitation with dental implants. It gave me an excellent opportunity to understand the philosophy of the business by seeing how Alex treats his patients, as well as gaining a lot of knowledge on a wide range of clinical and non-clinical topics.
Since joining the practice, I have undertaken further training in restorative dentistry, root canal therapy (Endodontics) and Invisalign invisible aligners, to name but a few. This has allowed me to broaden my scope of practice and I now treat patients with more complex treatment needs and desires. I have developed a specific interest in Endodontics and I am responsible for all of the root canal treatment we provide.
For those who don’t already know, Alex is a very keen and proficient cyclist. This enthusiasm for the sport has rubbed off on me and I have my own bike which I enjoy riding at weekends and at lunch times-if time allows. I have found that it is the perfect sport- fun and challenging as well as being the best remedy for a day of hard work.
Towards the end of 2018 I made a decision to work on a very part-time basis for Alex; just one to two days a week. I spent six months between January and June working on this arrangement. Very soon my circumstances altered and I was given the opportunity to once again work full time with Alex and the team.
I returned in July of this year and I am over the moon to be back! We have a fantastic set up at the Penistone and Barnsley practices and it is honestly a pleasure to come to work every day and treat our patients.
Alex is a fantastic boss and mentor and we have developed a very good working partnership and friendship over the past couple of years. I work in an extremely supportive and exciting environment with a brilliant team. The nurses, reception team and management staff are a pleasure to work with and I look forward to continuing to work alongside them in the future.
Both practices look fantastic with the name change, rebrand and the new website. I think extremely exciting times lie ahead.
Here’s to 2020!
