Root canal therapy

A big thank you so much! I am highly delighted with what Mike has done for me…He listened to me and had a lot of patience and skill. Mike is a fantastic dentist and I would recommend him to anyone!” – Mrs Deborah Jones

What is a root canal?

Your teeth have ‘roots’ that anchor them into your jawbone. Inside each of your teeth there is a mixture of blood vessels and nerves called pulp. Pulp sits inside a space called the pulp chamber and this extends down into the roots of the tooth. The pulp chamber within the root is called the root canal.

Dentist Mike Barrell has a special interest in this particular area and prides himself on many patients complimenting him on the fact that their fears of having this treatment quickly disappear once they begin and they wonder why they ever worried.

Mike’s philosophy is based very much in saving teeth wherever possible and strives to deliver the highest levels of care.

Why might I need root canal therapy?

We may suggest root canal therapy if there is inflammation or infection inside one of your teeth. If your tooth is damaged in any way, bacteria can get inside it. This causes irritation, pain and swelling. If the pulp inside the tooth becomes infected, this can spread into the pulp inside the root canal.

If an infection isn’t treated, it can spread further and cause an abscess. This can be painful, tender and can cause swelling around your tooth and jaw.

Sometimes your tooth may look darker in colour than your other teeth, which means that the nerve inside your tooth is dead or dying. Without treatment, the infection may spread further into your jawbone and you may need to have your tooth removed.

You may need root canal treatment for a number of reasons, including:
  • Severe tooth decay
  • Repeated dental treatment on the tooth
  • A cracked tooth
  • A broken crown
  • Cracked or loose fillings
  • Gum disease
  • An injury, such as a blow to your mouth

If you require Root Canal Therapy, please contact Emmer our Patient Care Coordinator to talk to us about your treatment options.

How root canal therapy works

What happens in root canal treatment?

We will clean and fill inside the tooth to prevent further damage or infection. Treatment may be over 2 or 3 visits and once complete your tooth can be made to look like natural tooth again with the use of composite filling or a bespoke crown that fits over your natural tooth.

How long will a treated tooth last?

If you look after your teeth well, a tooth that has been root canal treated can last a lifetime.

How successful is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment has a success rate of around 90%. Like any medical procedure, there is no 100% guarantee, however, it is proven to be a safe and effective treatment to save a natural tooth and remove pain.

Mike is so kind, helpful and reassuring. He sensed that I was nervous and scared ahead of my procedure – he kept me calm, talked to me through every stage and kept checking on me that I was okay. He is a true professional and made my experience much better than I ever imagined. Thank you so much Mike!
